Mr Pretyman's amendment definitely exempting agricultural land from the free increment value duty, was rejected by 301 to 196 votes amidst loud Opposition cheering. The Nationalists supported the amendment. An angry scene followed the chairman's accepting Mr Lloyd George's motion for the closure on the first three lines of Clause 1,, thereby shutting out 38 amendments, including one vetoing j the tax on ungotten minerals. The Unionists shouted, "Put the whole Bill" and declined to go to the lobbies. The scene continued until the adjournment, after which peace was restored and maintained.
