Ihc Stark Purchase. AtCKLiND, October 6 The Stark Purchase Commission Is making arrangements for opening the enquiry next Monday. Counsel has been engaged on behalf of Government and the Vigilance Committee. The proceedings will be open to the press. Indignation le expressed here at the action of the .Government in accepting the resignation .of Mr tL M. Brewer, land purchase agent. Suicide. Gnrr, headmaster of the Onehnnga public school, was found drowned this morning at the bridge over an atm of Manakau harbor. It was evidently a case of determined suicide as a rope was tied round the body and fastened to a pile of the bridge, the body thus being dragged under by the rush of the tide. Grave charges were pending against Gnrr of misconduct with a female pupil at the «choql #nd this is supposed to have led him to commit the act. He was an elderly man, with five children. He had highabillfcy, musical as well as educational, and was Chairman of the Auckland Branch of the Now Zealand Teachers’ Institute. ianosa Affairs. Advices from Samoa state that the International Conference on the sui ject of the government of that country is holding Its sittings, but the nature of the business has not been allowed to transpire.
