ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from, the Journals of the House of Representatives. Thursday, the 11th Day oj July, 1940. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all Bills or other matters relating to labour which may be referred to it: the Committee to consist of Mr. Barrell, Mr. Chapman, Mr. Coleman, Mr. Combs, the Hon. Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Holland, Mr. McKeen, Mr. Ncilson, Mr. Poison, and the Mover."—(Right Hon.' Mr. Eraser, for Mr. Webb.) Ordered, " That during the present session all Select Committees appointed by the House have leave to sit on days on which the House is not sitting, provided that when it is proposed to sit on any such day at least three days' notice shall bo given to each member of the Committee of the date of the sitting."—(Right Hon. Mr. Praskr.) Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1939 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. Mr. Eraser.) Wednesday, the 28th Day or August, 1940. Ordered, " That the Labour Bills Committee have leave to sit during the present sitting of the House." (Mr. Chapman.) Ordered, " That the Statutes Amendment Bill be referred to the Labour Bills Committee in order to consider clauses 18, 4t>, 58, and 59 (relating to industrial conciliation and arbitration, shops and offices, and workers' compensation)." —(Right Hon. Mr. Fraser.) Tuesday, the Ist Day of October, 1940. Ordered, " That the Shops and Offices Amendmont Bill be referred to the Labour Bills Committee." (Hon. Mr. Webb.) REPORTS. Statutes Amendment Bill. I have the honour to report that the Labour Bills Committee has carefully considered clauses 18, 46, 58, and 59 of the Statutes Amendment Bill which were referred to it, and recommends that they be allowed to proceed without amendment. 28th August, 1940. Shops and Offices Amendment Bill. I have the honour to report that the Labour Bills Committee has carefully considered the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill and taken evidence thereon. The Committee recommends that, in view of the strong divergence of opinion regarding the proposals contained in the Bill, the Bill be not proceeded with, but suggests that the Government give consideration to the question of the general consolidation of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, and its amendments. 26th November, 1940.

No. 71/1939. —Petition of W. V. Chick, Wellington. Praying that he be granted additional .compensation of £70 18s. 6d. in respect of an accident sustained while working chilled beef alongside the s.s. " Zealandic " at Wellington. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government for favourable consideration in order to permit of the Minister of Justice looking into the legal aspect of the case. sth December, 1940.

No. 12. —Petition of F. Carr and 65 Others, Wellington. Praying that the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act be amended to provide that female workers be employed until an hour not later than 11.30 p.m. 1 have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth December, 1940.

No. 55. —Petition of C. C. King and 107 Others, Auckland. Praying that the present trading hours for retail confectioners be adhered to. I have the honour to report that, as the subject-matter of this petition has already been dealt with by the Committee when considering the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth December, 1940.

No. 58. —Petition of J. Heeny and 284 Others, District of Dannevirke. Praying that the existing provisions for the statutory half-holiday and the late shopping night be adhered to. I have the honour to report that, as the subject-matter of this petition has already been dealt with by the Committee when considering the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth December, 1940.

No. 59.—Petition of E. L. Cushing and 220 Others, District of Dannevirke. Praying that the existing provisions for the statutory half-holiday and the late shopping night be adhered to. I have the honour to report that, as the subject-matter of this petition has already been dealt with by the Committee when considering the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth December, 1940. 0. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Labour Bills Committee desires to record its appreciation of the care and ability with which the Chairman, Mr. C. H. Chapman, has conducted the business of the Committee during the session ; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee, and be reported to the House. sth December, 1940. Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Labour Bills Committee desires to record its appreciation of the services rendered by the Clerk, Mr. D. H. Dopson, in the discharge of his various duties during the session; and it also desires that this resolution shall be recorded on the minutes of the Committee, and be reported to the House. sth December, 1940.

Final Report. I have the honour to report that the Labour Bills Committee, consisting of ten members, has held seven meetings during the session, with an average attendance of six members at each meeting. Five petitions and two Bills have been considered by the Committee and reported to the House. sth December, 1940. C. H. Chapman, Chairman.
