FRUITGROWING INDUSTRY. AMOUNT OF GOVERNMENT GUARANTEE PAID FROM 1922 TO 1929 (INCLUSIVE) AND FOR 1929; ALSO WAGES PAID TO PICKERS AND PACKERS.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated Bth August, 1930. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing—(l) The amount paid to orchardists as a guarantee of minimum prices for apples on the London market; (2) the total cost to the country last year, excluding extra cost of apples in New Zealand ; and (3) the wages paid to apple pickers and packers."—(Rev. Mr. Cakr.)

RETURN. (1) The total amount paid to fruitgrowers under the Government guarantee from 1922 (year of inception) to 1929, inclusive, was £111,299. (2) The amount paid out under the guarantee during 1929 was £64. (3) The rates of wages paid to apple pickers and packers vary in the different fruitgrowing districts. For pickers the rates range from Bs. to 12s. per day, and for packers from 9s. to 20s. per day, the lower figures being the minimum for female labour.
