ORDER OF REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Wednesday, the 4th Day of July, 1923. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to deal with all matters in con nection with defence ; with power to call for persons, papers, and records ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Burnett, Hon. Mr. Coates, Mr. de la Perrelle, Mr. J. S. Dickson, Mr. Glenn, Mr. Lee, Mr. Munro, Mr. Potter, Mr. Ransom, and the mover." —(Hon. Sir R. H. Rhodes.)

R.EPOBTB. No. 66.—Petition of Joseph Ikgley, of New Plymouth. Praying that he he granted the New Zealand War Medal and all the privileges appertaining thereto. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should he referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 7th August, 1923.
No. 19. —Petition of Christian Ktenle, of Epsom, Auckland. Praying for compensation for alleged wrongs suffered through his internment during the war. I am directed to report that, as this petition involves a matter of policy, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 7th August, 1923.
No. 18.—Petition of Ralph Montgomery, of Durban, South Africa. Praying, as a native of New Zealand, for relief in connection with his military services with the South African forces. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 7th August, 1923.
No. 46.—Petition of Leo Sim, of Mangaweka. Praying for payment of an amount alleged to have been short-paid for his military services. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 71 li August, 1923.
No. 131. —Petition of R. Waddell and 51 Others, of Broad Bay, Dunedin. Praying that favourable consideration may be given to the petition of A. E. Wellbourn and wife, who are unable, through the war disabilities of the male petitioner, to earn sufficient for their support. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 7 tli August, 1923.
.No. 89.—Petition of A. E. WeMhBOURN and Another, of Broad Bay, Dunedin. Petitioners state that through ill health contracted by the male petitioner whilst on active service during the war they are unable to earn sufficient for their maintenance, and pray for relief. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government to favourably consider the granting of a compassionate allowance. 7th August, 1923.
No. 29. - Petition of James Ratteniutry, of Waitara. Praying that provision may be made whereby payment of pension granted in 1922 may be made retrospective to inception of Act of 1913, or a compassionate allowance be granted. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 14th August, 1923.

No. 123. —Petition of Martin P. Kenny, of Wellington. Petitioner alleges that owing to injuries received whilst carrying out his military duties he is unable to earn sufficient to support him, and he prays for relief. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 14th August, 1923.
No. 132. —Petition of Irene Annie Dawson, of Wellington. Praying for reinstatement of pension to enable her to provide for her son, whose father was killed in action during the war. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 14th August, 1923.
No. 77.—Petition of A. G. Coleman, of Masterton. Praying for an increase of pension. I am directed to report that, as Parliament has now made provision for a Pensions Appeal Board, the Committee is of opinion that all claims for increase of pension should be referred to that Board before coming to Parliament. It therefore recommends that this petition should be referred to the Government without comment. 14th August, 1923. *
No. 11.—Petition of Mrs. Sara Elizabeth Ellis, of New Plymouth. Praying for a pension in recognition of her late husband's military services. I am directed to report that, as this petition refers to a matter of policy, the Committee makes no recommendation. 15th August, 1923.
No. 52.—Petition of Harriet Simeon, of Epsom, Auckland. Praying that she be granted the difference between the New Zealand and Imperial rates of gratuity for services on the nursing staff during the war. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 17th August, 1923.
No. 26.—Petition of Captain W. T. Beck, D.S.O. Praying for adequate compensation for loss of office through retrenchment from the Defence Department. I am directed to report that, as it has been reported to the Committee this case has been settled by the Government, no recommendation is made. 17th August, 1923.
No. 4, Sess. I.—Petition of Sydney Tovey, of Wellington. Praying for compensation for alleged neglect of treatment for injuries received whilst on duty on board H.M. troopship " Ulimaroa " during .the war. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion the petitioner has a case for the new Appeal Board, and therefore makes no recommendation. 20th August, 1923.
No. 139. —Petition of John Stevenson, of Waianiwa, Southland. Praying that his war pension may be increased to £60 per annum as from the date of granting the present pension. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 20th August, 1923.

No. 164. —Petition of Frederic Francis Wolter, of Wellington. Praying that a position may be found for him in the Government Service, or that he be recommended to the Executive of the League of Nations for employment, and that compensation be granted him for hardships brought about by his internment during the war. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion that this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 28th August, 1923.
No. 31.—Petition of James Johnson Wilson, of Whakatane. Praying for compensation for injuries received whilst serving in the Navy. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 28th August, 1923.
No. 151. —Petition of Cecily Anastasia Wolfe, of Auckland. Petitioner states that her husband, Colonel Wolfe, after long military service, was retired from the Defence Department through ill health, without any pension, and is now quite unable to earn sufficient to support his family. She prays for relief. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. 28th August, 1923.
