ORDER OE REFERENCE. Extract from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Tuesday, the 29th Day of October, 1918. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from A to L that may be referred to it by the Petitions Classification Committee, to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convoy to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House, and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House; also to have power to call for persons and papers j three to be a quorum : the Committeo to consist of Mr. Brown, Mr. Fraser, Mr. Harris, Mr. Parr, Mr. Payne, Mr. T. RBPOBTS. No. 476 of 1917.—Petition of the Auckland Institute and Museum Board, of Auckland. Prating for a refund of the sum of £912 175., the amount of taxation paid in respect of certain mortgages. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee this petition should be referred to the Government lor favourable consideration. sth December, 1918.

No. 23 of Session 1, 1918.—Petition of Lillias Rarron, of Sydney. Prating for a compassionate allowance on account of her late husband's services as District Surveyor in the Lands and Survey Department. I am directed to report that the Committee endorses the previous recommendation of the Committee in 1916—namely, " The Committee is strongly of the opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and that petitioner should be granted a prompt compassionate allowance "—and therefore the Committee recommends this resolution to the urgent and favourable consideration of the Government. sth December, 1918. No. 24 of Session 1, 1918.—Petition of M. J. Gannon, of Auckland. PRATING for a compassionate allowance for services rendered as Native Interpreter in the Maori War. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. sth December, 1918. No. 484 of I*9l7.—Petition of Martha M. Gill, of 17;! Anderson's Pay Road, Dunedin. Prating for further compassionate allowance on account of her late husband's faithful Government service. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee" having in view the petitioner's ignorance of the provisions of the Old-age Pensions Act, this petition should be recommended to the Government for favourable consideration. sth December, 1918. No. 357 of 1917.—Petition of Thomas Lock, of Onehunga. Prating for inquiry and compensation for loss sustained through the alleged negligence of public servants administering a Department of the State. 1 am directed to report (hat the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. sth December, 1918. No. 117 of Session 11. 1918.-—Petition of M. S. Bbalb and Another, of Auckland. Praying for inquiry into the refusal by the State Advances Board to grant a loan. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion the Government should inquire into the reasons why this loan was refused under what seems to be- very extraordinary circumstances, and recommends the petition to the Government for favourable consideration. 6th December, 1918. No. 82 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of W. Beekman, of Dunedin. Praying for compensation on account of the death of her husband through, accident whilst demonstrating bomb-throwing at the Trentham Camp. I am directed to report that, while sympathizing with the petitioner in her misfortune, the Committee regrets it has no recommendation to make. 6th December, 1918.

No. 484 of 1917.—Petition of Martha M. Gill, of 173 Anderson's Bay Road, Dunedin. Praying for- further compassionate allowance on account of her late husband's faithful Government service. I am directed to report that in (he opinion of the Committee" having in view the petitioner's ignorance, of the provisions of the Old-age Pensions Act, this petition should be recommended to the Government for favourable consideration. sth December, 1918.

No. 82 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of W. Beekman, of Dunedin. No. 26 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of G. M. BuRLiNSON, of Wellington. Praying for an amendment of the law to enable him to receive superannuation on an equitable basis, or an equivalent in money. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends the Government either to pay the superannuation, based on the full amount of the salary and allowances received by petitioner — viz., £420—with the proviso that the higher scale of contributions payable for the higher superannuation amount be deducted, or grant such lump sum as will be an equivalent. The Committee is of opinion this case discloses the fact that as regards the present superannuation scheme, in cases where the remuneration is partly cash and partly house and other allowances, an amendment of the law, which should be retrospective, is necessary, and recommends, the petition to the Government for favourable consideration. 6th December, 1918.

No. 409 of 1917.—Petition of John Chisholm and 49 Others, of Waianiwa. Praying that compensation may be granted the father of the late Corporal 11. E. Stevenson, who died of tuberculosis at Cape Town. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 6th December, 1918. No. 96 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of Edward de Mey, of Awatuna. PuATINO for compensation for alleged malicious prosecution in connection with a charge of sheepstealing. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and regret the Government did not give effect to last year's recommendation. 6th December, 1918. No. 11l of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of T. E. Gibson, of Christohurch. Praying for a refund of stamp duty paid by him on an agreement annulled by the Supreme Court. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. . 6th December, 1918. No. 133 of Session 11, 1918.—Petition of Isahella A. Kerr, of New Plymouth. Praying for a compassionate allowance for services rendered by her late husband as Stipendiary Magistrate. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends this petition to the Government for favourable consideration, and trusts the Government will give such sum as has been granted in similar cases. 6th December, 1918.
