ANNUAL EBPOETS OF DOMAIN BOARDS.

Ihe Under-Secretary for Lands to the Right Hon. the Minister of Lands. Department of Lands, Wellington, 24th July, 1911. I have the honour to transmit herewith a synopsis of the annual reports of Domain Boards for the year ended 31st December, 1910, which have been furnished in accordance with section 45 of the Public Reserves and Domains Act, 1908. The reports, as in previous years, indicate steady improvement of the public domains of the Dominion. Some delay in the receipt of reports has been occasioned by a number of Domain- Boards being under the impression that by forwarding a copy of the annual report and balance-sheet to the Audit Department the provisions of the Act have been complied with, overlooking the fact that a copy should also be sent to the Minister of Lands. The following table shows the number of domains in the various land districts, together with the total areas :—

AUCKLAND LAND DISTRICT. Ahirau Domain. Section No. 17, Block V, Harataunga Survey District. Area, 16 acres 2 roods. This domain is under the control of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Auckland, and is leased on a year-to-year tenancy. Improvements now on domain : Fencing. Used for grazing. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Keeping down noxious weeds Aratapu Domain. Section No. 42, Kopuru Parish. Area, 44 acres 1 rood 35 perches. Work done during year : Pipe-drains cleaned. Improvements now on domain : Draining and grassing. Leased. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Clearing and planting. Arawa Park Domain. Section No. 23, Rotorua Rural Sections. Area, 46 acres 3 roods 17 perches. Work done during year : Domain securely fenced, new gates erected, part ploughed preparatory to sowing in grass, areas set apart for racing-track and football-grounds, and notices placed in conspicuous places. Improvements now on domain : Fencing, trees, and grandstand. Used for races, football, and sports. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Removing present grandstand and replacing it by a new structure, if funds are available. Auckland Domain. Situated in Rangitoto Survey District. Area, 236 acres 1 rood. Work done during year : Eight tennis-courts completed, with small dressing-shed, and bushhouse finished and stocked with plants. Improvements now on domain : Drive, paths, four rustic bridges, fencing, seats, lodge and one other residence, two ponds or lakes concreted at bottom and surrounded with rockery and plantation and fenced with rustic oak, caretaker's residence, three propagating-houses, potting-shed, tool-sheds and boiler-house, bush-house, propagatingframes, nursery and well laid-out grounds and garden, gates, cricket-ground, pavilion, dressingrooms, conveniences, stabling, and palings. Used for picnics, cricket, football, hockey, lacrosse, sports, band-concerts, and general recreation. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Laying out a further area for sports, extending present gardens and gradually converting them into botanic gardens, erecting conveniences, and generally improving the area. Avondale Domain. Section No. 361, Waikomiti Parish. Area, 38 acres 2 roods. Work done during year : Fences repaired, gate and turnstile erected, and noxious weeds eradicated. Improvements now on domain : Fencing, grassing, and planting. Used for ing. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Fencing and tree-planting. Awhitu Domain. Section No. 580, Awhitu Parish. Area, 8 acres 3 roods 30 perches. Work done during year : Clearing. Improvements now on domain : Fencing and clearing. Used for picnics. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Clearing and draining.

Birkenhead Domain. Section No. 122, Takapuna Parish. Area, 112 acres 2 roods Six acres leased for grazing. Buffalo Domain. Sections Nos. 31 and 32, Village of Buffalo, Suburbs of Coromandel. Area, 20 acres 1 rood 39 perches. Work done during year : Clearing, cutting blackberries, and general improvements. Improvements now on domain : Post-and-wire, galvanized-iron, and picket fencing, and gates. Used for football, cricket, sports, and picnics. A military encampment was held on the domain during the year. Proposed operations for ensuing year : Ploughing, levelling, clearing blackberries, and general improvements. Cambridge Domain. Sections Nos. 576, 359, 360, 361, 361 a, 367, 581, 575, 579, 363, 363 a, 364, 365, 366, 368, and 370, Town of Cambridge East, and the Cambridge East Town Belt. Area, 484 acres 1 rood 7 perches. A pair of white swans have been presented to the Board by His Majesty the King, and a suitable pen erected for them. The seats and gates have been repainted, and a handsome pair of entrance-gates have been presented and erected by the inhabitants of the district to the memory of the late Mr. Thomas Wells, who was for many years Chairman of the Board. The grounds have been generally maintained, and gorse and weeds cleared. Improvements now on domain ; Band-rotunda, pavilion, bowling-greens, tennis-courts, native ami ornamental trees, seats, flowerbeds, walks, fences, hedges, and gates. The pavilion and walks are lighted with gas, and the lake is stocked with white and black swans, mallard, paradise, teal, and other ducks. Used for bowls, tennis, band-concerts, picnics, general recreation, and as a promenade. Proposed operations for ensuing year.: Generally improving the grounds, procuring another pair of swans, grubbing and clearing gorse and noxious weeds, and clearing raupo from the edges of the lake. Casnell Island Domain. Section No. 196, Mahurangi Parish. Area, 16 acres 3 roods. Used for camping and picnics. Devonport Domain. Salt-water baths have been installed since last year, and are proving a great success. The swimming-baths have been frequented by a very large number of bathers. The St. Clair beach has not improved during the year, westerly winds having caused a continuous scour. Unusually heavy pedestrian traffic has also tended to reduce the level of the beach for a distance of some chains. The progress at St. Kilda beach has been slow compared with past years, caused by the absence of south-west winds, which usually bring up a supply of sand. Tracks have been cut through the lupins, and, where possible, covered with clay. Surf bathing has become a popular pastime. It is proposed to have an area prepared for tree-planting, and also to plant marram grass and lupins where required. Reclamation and general maintenance will also be continued. (NOTE.
