The Registrar, Victoria College Council, to the Hon. the Minister of Education. Sir, — Victoria College, Wellington, 22nd May, 1902. I have the honour, in pursuance of " The Victoria College Act, 1897," to forward the following report from the Council on the working of the Victoria College for the year ended the 31st December, 1901 :— Classes were held in the following subjects: English language and literature, Latin, Greek, French, German, mental science, jurisprudence and constitutional history, law, political economy and history, mathematics, mechanica, chemistry, physics, and geology. The number of students attending classes was 144, and there were fifty-one exempted students attached to the College. Of these, 100 kept terms. At the New Zealand University Examinations two students passed the M.A. examination ; one gained a senior scholarship; nineteen passed the first section and seven the final section of the B.A. degree; two the final section of the B.Sc. degree; four the first examination and four the second examination of the LL.B. degree. The number of students at present entered for the year 1902 is 180. At the examination for the Queen's Scholarships in December last there were 121 candidates from the following Education Districts, viz. : Wellington, 89 ; Hawke's Bay, 7; Taranaki, 2 ; Wanganui, 9 ; Nelson, 5 ; Westland, 9. The six scholarships were awarded to scholars from the following schools : Waimangaroa, Masterton, Mount Cook Boys (Wellington), Pahiatua, Petone, and Havelock North, Out of the twenty-four Queen's Scholarships awarded up to this date, four have been given up and the holders of six others are attending the Victoria College. The rest are at secondary schools. Under an Act of the General Assembly passed last session the College Council is now acquiring a site for the College buildings on the Salamanca Eoad. Preparations are being made for levelling so much of the ground as will be necessary.

The Council must again refer to the need of a Professor of Biology. Students have to go elsewhere in order to complete their course for a science degree. The drain upon the funds of the College for the Queen's Scholarships precludes the Council from making this necessary appointment, and the Council urge upon the Government that this burden should be removed from them, a burden which no other University College in the colony has to bear. Auckland College, which has a statutory annual grant of the same amount as this College (£4,000), has no scholarships to pay out of it, and, in addition to the grant, has some reserves which produce revenue. The Victoria College possesses a reserve, but it is of such a nature that it cannot be let, even though offered at 6d. an acre.
