The Registrar of the College to the Minister of Education. Sir,— University College, Auckland, 28th May, 1902. In pursuance of section 25 of " The Auckland University College Act, 1882," the Council has the honour to make the following report:— 1. The number of persons who attended lectures in this College in 1901 was 182 : Graduates, 9 (males, 7 ; females, 2); undergraduates, 102 (males, 74 ; females, 28); and non-matriculated, 71 (males, 30; females, 41). There were also ten students exempted from attendance at lectures: of these, six, however, attended lectures more or less. The total number of students was thus 186. 2. Council. —Sir G. Maurice O'Eorke was reappointed a member of the Council by His Excellency the Governor in Council. Mr. Jackson Palmer was re-elected a member of the Council by members of the General Assembly resident in the Provincial District of Auckland, and W. C. W. McDowell, M.8., CM., was elected a member of the Council by graduates of the University of New Zealand. 3. Professors and Lecturers. —Lecturer W. E. Thomas, Mus. Doc, was at the meeting of the Council held on the 17th December, 1901, promoted to the status of a Professor in consideration of his high academical standing and the satisfactory manner in which he has performed his duties. This promotion to take effect from the Ist January, 1902. The Lecturer on Modern Languages (Monsieur de Montalk) died on the 6th September, 1901, after holding the appointment for seven years. The Council obtained the services of Mr. E. G. Atkinson, of the Auckland Grammar School, to deliver lectures for the remainder of the session and to conduct the annual examination. The Lecturer on Mechanical Engineering (Mr. Ashly Hunter) resigned his position on the 12th December, not seeing his way to continue without receiving some remuneration in addition to the fees, which were inconsiderable in amount —£8. 4. Income. —From the statement of accounts it will be seen that the income of the College is not adequate to meet the necessary expenditure for the year: Receipts, £4,408 9s. Bd.; expenditure, £4,485 2s. Bd.; deficiency, £76 13s. 5. 'Endowments. —The income from the endowment of 30,354 acres in 1901 was £297 9s. Bd., and the expenditure upon them was £48 195., showing a net revenue of £248 10s. Bd.

6. Degrees and Honours. —The degrees and honours gained at the last November examination of the New Zealand University are as follows: Master of Arts, 7; Honours in Arts, 6; Senior Scholarships, 4; Tinline Scholarship, 1; Exhibition 1851 Scholarship, 1. Bachelor of Laws—First examination, 1; second examination, 2. Bachelor of Science—First section, 2 ; final, 1. Bachelor of Arts —First section, 9; final, 13.
