PART IV.-EXPENDITURE.

Eepobt on the Condition and Settlement of all Lands acquired under " The Native Land Purchases Act, 1892." The lands acquired under the provisions of the above-mentioned Act in the Wangarei District will meet a pressing demand for settlement in that locality. The purchase of the Paeroa Township at Ohinemuri will enable the Government to set at rest the anxiety, of the residents on the question of the tenure of their holdings. The Papamoa and other blocks in the Bay of Plenty District are now in course of settlement. It may be found advisable not to do much—beyond meeting urgent demands—in the way of settling the lands acquired in the King country (Bohepotae) until some further progress has been made in the purchase of the intermediate and adjoining blocks. The Ngaere Swamp, near Stratford, is being prepared for settlement, for which the greater portion of it is well adapted. The Awarua Blocks, between Hunterville and Taupo, and the Waikopiro Block near Danevirke are on the whole first-class lands from a settlement point of view. S. Peecy Smith, Lands and Survey Office, Surveyor-General. Wellington, 15th June, 1894.
