EDUCATION: THE AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. [In Continuation of E.-8, 1888.]

Presented in pursuance of Section 25 of "The Auckland University College Act, 1888."

The Chairman to the Hon. the Ministee of Education. Sib,— University College, Auckland, 30th April, 1889. In pursuance of section 25 of "The Auckland University College Act, 1882," I have the honour to make the following report : — 1. It has been pointed out in previous reports that the work of the College has been much hindered by the want of a suitable building. This disadvantage, it is expected, will be considerably diminished in the course of the present year (1889), inasmuch as His Excellency the Governor is empowered, by "The Special Powers and Contracts Act, 1885," to transfer to the Council of this College the section of land on which are the premises at present occupied by the Survey and Land Departments in Auckland, so soon as those premises shall have been vacated. The construction of the new building required for Government departments in Auckland being now nearly completed, the vacating of the offices referred to will probably soon ensue. The area of the land to be thus transferred is 1 acre and 11 perches, and the buildings upon it, one of which has been occupied by the College since its commencement, will be rendered, as far as practicable, suitable for the purposes of the College work. 2. The ex officio members of the College Council are the Mayor of the City of Auckland, Mr. A. E. Devore, and the Chairman of the Auckland Board of Education, Mr. J. H. Upton. The remaining members form three groups of three members each, one of each group retiring in each year. The members of the College Council who have been elected by the members of the General Assembly resident in the Provincial District of Auckland are—the Eight Eev. W. G. Cowie, D.D., Anglican Bishop of Auckland; Mr. Edwin Hesketh; and the Hon. Sir Frederick Whitaker, K.C.M.G.: those appointed by the Governor in Council are —his Honour Mr. Justice T. B. Gillies, the Hon. Colonel T. M. Haultain, and the Eev. Alexander Eeid: and those appointed by the Governor in Council, pending the time when there shall be thirty graduates of the University of New Zealand having their names on the College books, are—the Eev. David Bruce ; the Hon. Sir George Maurice O'Eorke, 8.A., Speaker of the House of Eepresentatives; and Mr. H. G. Seth Smith, M.A., Chief Judge of the Native Land Court. 3. Sir Maurice O'Eorke has been (for the sixth time) elected to be Chairman of the College Council, and Colonel Haultain has been re-elected Vice-chairman. 4. The number of graduates of the University of New Zealand having their names on the College books on the 31st December, 1888, was 25, including 9ad eundcm. At the end of the previous year the corresponding numbers were 22 and 9. 5. The teaching staff is as follows. The professors are, — Classics and English: H. M. Posuett, M.A., LL.D., Dublin; Senior Moderator in Classics, 1877 ; Wall Oriental Scholar. Mathematics : "W. S. Aldis, M.A. Cantab.; Senior Wrangler and First Smith's Prizeman, 1861. Thomas, M.A. Oxon.; late Scholar Balliol College; BurdettCoutts University Scholar. Music : Carl Schmitt, Knight Commander Order Crown of Italy. The instructor in drawing (School of Applied Science) is J. G. Trevithiok, N.A. 6. Instruction in elementary science, specially adapted to the requirements of the Education Department, has been given by the Professors of Chemistry and Biology to teachers employed by the Auckland Board of Education and to others. 7. The institution of the department of music is tentative, and the arrangements are therefore, for the present, temporary.
