RAID LASTS 12 HOURS
1200 CARRIER PLANES NEW YORK, July 12 The Tokyo radio says about 1200 carrier planes participated in the raid on Tuesday, which lasted for 12 hours. A total of 1940 American planes of all types was over Honshu Island the same day. Twenty-six carrier planes were shot down. The commentator stated: “Unless we can resist this mounting air challenge we cannot annihilate the enemy on the homeland.” He added that future air attacks would undoubtedly be a prelude to a decisive battle for the homeland. The new technique of “fireskip bombing” developed by Thirteenth Air Force Lightnings has proved utterly devastating against Japanese installations and ground forces in the South-west Pacific. Belly tanks filled with 10001 b. of jellied petrol can be dropped with pinpoint accuracy and start a virtually inextinguishable lire over an area the size of a football field. The improvised incendiary bombs can be released safely at a much lower level than high explosives.
