AIR BLOCKADE

JAPANESE CONVOYS SHANGHAI TO JAPAN LAND ROUTE FORCED (United Pres* Assn.—Eleo. Tel. Copyright) (Received July 13, 12.15 p.m.) GUAM, July 12. American naval aircraft frustrated Japanese attempts to run two troop-laden convoys from Shanghai to Japan to bolster the homeland defences, said Rear-Admiral John Dale Price. Heavy flak from the convoy prevented effective bombing, but one ship was temporarily set on fire.

Rear-Admiral Price said the Fleet Air Wing I. was able to patrol over Korea and Tsushima Strait over 16 hours a day. Aerial blockade had virtually closed the three-days Shanghai-Japan route, presumably compelling the Japanese to adopt the three-weeks route by rail into northern Korea, thence by sea, using small 80-ton freighters. Air Wing planes had broken the rail line. Rear-Admiral Price added that privateers strafing ships in the Korean inlets had seen Koreans applauding right in front of the Japanese. Rear-Admiral Price, who is the newly-appointed commander of Okinawa naval operating base, has been succeeded as Commander of Fleet Air Wing I. by Rear-Admiral John Perry.
