LOCAL AND GENERAL

Weather Contrast A bitterly cold day on which the temperature at no stage reached 50 degrees was experienced in Hamilton yesterday and its bleak nature was in direct contrast to the previous day when glorious sunshine without a trace of cloud made conditions perfect. A frost of four degrees was recorded at Hamilton yesterday, while in the 24 hours at 9 a.m. today 40 points of rain fell. Jockey’s Dislocated Shoulder A dislocated shoulder was suffered by the Te Rapa jockey, Wallace Kenneth Caddy, aged 18. when he fell from his mount in one of the jumping events at the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday. He was admitted to tl;e Waikato Hospital.

Plum Tree in Flower The vagaries of the season are evident in a Hamilton garden, where a Christmas plum tree has blossomed during Ihe past few days. Indicative of a particularly favourable autumn when growth has been like that of spring, this occurrence is distinctly unusual though, unfortunately, prophets who are experienced in reading the portents of the season do not regard it as a harbinger of an early spring.

Quick ThinkingAn example of a candidate being “quick in the uptake” was given at a meeting where candidates for Hamilton municipal honours were on a time limit in their addresses to electors. One candidate had easily exceeded his limjt and when he was given an audible reminder he promptly interrupted his address with the remark, “I move that extra time be granted.—Granted. Thank you,” and proceeded with his address as though nothing had happened to interrupt the even flow of his arguments and criticism. The audience seemed to appreciate the neat way he evaded the time limit. New Telephone Directories

The delivery of new telephone directories to Hamilton telephone exchange subscribers was commenced today by the Post Office but owing to the large number involved and the weight of directories to be handled in the borough by postwomen, it is unlikely that delivery will be completed to all subscribers until about Thursday. To enable exchange switching equipment to be utilised to the full extent the Post Office has found it necessary to change the telephone numbers of approximately 200 subscribers concurrently with the issue of the new directories, and to avoid inconvenience to these subscribers the Post Office notifies that the new directories should not be brought into use until May 25. The new numbers included in the directory will not be effective until the date mentioned.
