ACCOUNTANT ARRESTED
WAR REGULATIONS CHARGE REMANDED TO HAMILTON WANGANUI, Saturday When he appeared before Mi J. H. Salmon, S.M., yesterday in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, charged that on January 9 at Taihape he had in his possession certain circulars dated January 8, 1944, with a view to facilitating the publication of a subversive statement, Royle Richard Victor Challiner, aged 49, public accountant, of Hamilton, was remanded to appear at Hamilton on January 21. Detective-Sergeant J. J. Murray appeared for the police and Mr C. F. Treadwell represented defendant. In granting the remand the magistrate allowed bail in defendant’s own recognisance of £SO, a stipulation being that he report once daily to the Hamilton police. Defendant was arrested on an express train at Taihape early on the morning of Sunday, January 9. The charge was laid under the Public Safety Emergency Regulations, 1940.
