OVERSEAS RATIONING
Items of the Canadian Food Rationing Scheme, which will interest New Zealand women, were mentioned in a talk 1 by Mr A. W. Essex, of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He presented a travelogue sound film, depicting Canada’s scenery and architecture. Each person is allowed 1 l-3oz. of tea weekly, or 5 l-3oz. of coffee, neither of these rations being available to children under 12; ilb. sugar weekly, plus special seasonal allowance to housewives for canning; !lb. butter and 1 to 2Jlb. of meat, according to type of meat. A Jetter giving sidelights on the rationing of food in Britain has been received lately. The writer, a woman, states: “I was lucky yesterday. I was able to buy Jib. of macaroni, the first for years, so must save it for a special occasion. What we are most short of is dried fruits. Last month 1 got two ounces of dates and two ounces of prunes. Fortunately I have : some sultanas and some small rais- j ins, so I hope to have enough for one Christmas pudding, for I have never missed having a pudding on Christj mas Day yet. Suet will be a bit of | a problem, but I have plenty of time j to save up my odd ounces. My cakes I have to be made with my two-ounce j ration of lard, and they have to be | either madeira, ground rice or carra- ■ way seed. I have only' enough seed | lor one more cake, and I understand it is unobtainable in the shops." She also refers to the New Zealand tea ration which, she understands, is smaller than that in Britain.
