EXEMPTION GRANTED

DAIRY FACTORY WORKERS Five employees of the N.Z. Cooperative Dairy Company, Limited, were appealed for at today’s sitting of the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board, Messrs S. L. Paterson, S.M. (chairman), A. E. Manning and R. Coulter. The men were Thomas Smith, factory hand, Orini; Jack Ellis, general hand at the milk powder factory. Matangi; John Francis Davis, general hand, Te Puninga cheese factory; Phillip Francis Gaddis, general hand, Te Puninga cheese factory; Richard Nelson Allen, assistant butter-maker, Tirau. W. Y. Kirkman, factory superintendent, asked leave to withdraw the appeal for Gaddis, who had been taken from the firm's employ by the district manpower officer for special work in Auckland. The other four men were regarded as essential to the dairy industry and were all in important jobs. The board granted sine die adjournment in the cases of Davis, Ellis and Smith. Allen was recommended for release from military service for an indefinite period. 44 The manpower officer has no jurisdiction in a case like this, which amounts to taking a man out of an essential industry,” remarked the chairman in referring to the appeal for Gaddis.
