PARKED BICYCLES

MORE STREET RACKS NEEDED Some shopkeepers have experienced trouble and expense through damage to their shop windows and frontages caused, it is contended, by cyclists leaving their bicycles leaning against the windows. The subject was referred to in a communication from one firm read at the Hamilton Borough Council meeting last night, in which the council was asked to take steps to have the nuisance corrected. The writers stated that the trouble occurred mostly on Saturday afternoons, when side windows and vitrolite facings were broken, involving a considerable outlay in replacements. The Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, said the traffic inspector had investigated the complaint. He was not satisfied that the damage was done by bicycles, for the breakages were so low down that a bicycle would not do the damage complained of. The Mayor continued with a suggestion that extra bicycle, racks should be provided in various parts of the business area, and he moved that the Works Committee be asked to report on that aspect. It was contended that bicycles | should not be allowed to be parked i on footpaths, but the council was not i responsible if damage resulted from i the bicycles being parked there. | Inspector W. E. Nicholson said there were not enough racks for 5 | per cent of the bicycles in use in ! Hamilton. Cyclists did not know i where to put tneir machines, and the trouble was accentuated by the j petrol restrictions. I Tite Works Committee is to be j asked to provide lor more bicycle | racks.
