“BONDS FOR BOMBERS”
TOWN’S IMPROVED RESPONSE DISTRICT TOTAL £29,145 Yesterday’s response for the sale of “Bonds for Bombers” in Hamilton was much better than on the first two days, £5048 being contributed. A total of £10,133 has been received in Hamilton for the three days, and this is a little over half of what is required for the week. Following are the sums received at other centres in the Hamilton postal district yesterday, the total received to date being'in parentheses:— Cambridge, £2247 (£3462); Huntly, £l9O (£758); Matamata £2556 (£3381); MorrinsviUe, £524 (£1197); Ngaruawahia, £220 (£899); Otorohanga, £515 (£1277); Rotorua, £494 (£907); Taumarunui, £733 (£3080); Te Awamutu, £IBB9 (£3148); Te Kuiti, £304 (£903). The total for the district for the three days is £29,145. The Hamilton Borough Council decided at last night’s meeting to invest £4OO in Bonds for Bombers. CAMBRIDGE EFFORT AIR FORCE BAND’S VISIT (special io Time*) CAMBRIDGE, Wednesday In conjunction with the “ Bonds for Bombers ” campaign this week Cambridge made a special effort this afternoon when a visit was received from the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band. The band led a march of troops, under Colonel Stanley, I mechanised units being included. Also associated with the march through the town were the Women’s War Service Auxiliary units. Assembled at the Jubilee Gardens and in front of the Town Hall were fully 2000 people. They were addressed by the Mayor, Mr Edgar James, and the chairman of the Cambridge War Savings Committee, Mr M. Wells. The latter stated that up to mid-day today over £2OOO had ! been raised in Cambridge in bonds for bombers. To date Cambridge had a total of £34,043 in National Savings and its weekly quota of £430 had always been found. Along with the Mayor, Mr Wells expressed appreciation of the visit of the band, under Fight-Lieutenant Gladstone Hill, also of the Army’s co-operation at very short notice. Before giving a concert at the Jubilee Gardens, the band, led by Warrant - Officer Hardwicke (drummajor), gave a display of marching which thrilled the crowd. Not 'the least impressive part of the proceedings was the presence of three aeroplanes. Many people took advantage of the opportunity to buy bonds at the Town Hall steps. AUCKLAND DISTRICT £134,301 In the Auckland district, which extends from North Gape to Mercer, the first day brought £18,940, the second day £33,887 and yesterday £81,474, making a three-day total of £134,301. In the city £118,706 has been subscribed toward the week’s quota of £200,000. The Royal New Zealand Air Force Band will arrive in Auckland tomorrow morning. £l7O A MINUTE HASTINGS, Wednesday Hastings has taken up a challenge by the Nelson national savings committee, which claimed to have created a Dominion record in obtaining £1665 in “Bonds for Bombers” investments in 20 minutes, representing a rate of £BO a minute. During a 20-minutes’ interval at the screening of films in Hastings £3361 was subscribed at a rate of nearly £l7O a minute.
