RESERVIST OPPOSES APPEAL Contending that his training and experience would be of more use to his country in the Air Force, a reservist, an electrical wireman, successfully opposed tne appeal made on his behalf by the Public Works Department before the Hamilton Manpower Committee yesterday. It was submitted by the representative of the Public Works Department that the reservist and another in similar circumstances were key- , men and the department had only one or two others in the area for the type of work they were engaged on. The other reservist was stationed at Henderson. The reservist contended that he was not indispensable. The work he had been engaged on was mostly of a labouring nature and did not require electrical wiring knowledge. Anyone could do the work under an overseer. On the committee’s decision that the appeal was dismissed being announced, the representative of the appellant department was the first to congratulate the reservist, who, it was explained earlier, had been ac- ■ cepted for the Air Force. NATIONAL SERVICE STAFF An appeal by the Director of National Service for a contact officer employed under the National Service Emergency Regulations in Hamilton was dismissed by the Hamilton District Manpower Committee at yesterday’s sitting. The district manpower officer, Mr C. F. Allen, gave evidence in support of the appeal, stressing the importance of having an efficient staff to deal with the enrolments of men and women recently required to register. An appeal by the reservist on the grounds of undue hardship was adjourned sine die, to be reviewed in not more than three months.
