ENEMY BEATEN OFF
SITUATION NOW QUIETER BRITISH BAYONET CHARGE romcis: wireless) (Received Feb. 13, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 12 After heavy fighting an enemy atiack on the Allied positions in the Faan area, on the Salween River, was defeated and the situation is qow much quitter. The enemy appears to have temporarily abandoned operations in that area. AllieJ casualties weie not heavy. During the fighting in the Mataban area a company of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry got to close quarters with the enemy and charged at the point of the bayonet. The enemy fled, throwing away their weapons and suffering considerable casualties. No air raids over Burma were reported during the past night. Yesterday morning enemy aircraft attacked our troops in the Martaban sector. In support of our land forces our bombers, escorted by Allied fighters, attacked enemy positions in the forward sectors during the morning of Wednesday. In the afternoon our bombers carried out an attack on Japanese forces at Moulmein mu on the River Salween. All our aircraft returned safel/. Reconnaissances over enemy territory were carried out during the day.
