COAL IN SHORT SUPPLY
DEMANDS OF INDUSTRY Coal supplies in Hamilton are short, owing, it is said, to the inability of the Railway Department to provide trucks. Work at the mines has been held two or three times in the past fortnight, and the hold-up has affected many industries, not only in Hamilton but also in various parts of the Waikato and in Auckland. All grades of coal are in short supply, including slack and steam coal. Dairy factories are endeavouring to carry on by utilising reserve stocks, but the situation is not viewed with equanimity. Kitchen coal is in greater supply than other grades in Hamilton, and in some quarters this grade is being crushed for slack to be used in industries. A. large quantity of coal and slack is used at the Hamilton municipal gasworks and at the Waikato Hospital. At both places supplies are below normal and every effort is being made to conserve available stocks. Reserves had been built up and set aside for the period during which the miners would observe the Christmas holidays, but these reserves have already been drawn on to some extent.
