DE PROFUNDIS

(By J. J. Freeland)

Lord, I am come, who have not prayed in years But walked my wilful way with puny prior. Nor sought my self-sufficiency to hide. Lord, I am come, brought hither by my fears. So many other mothers’ sons must die That freedom live, it needs must scarce seem fair To ask that Thou shouldst keep mine in Thy care Above all others. Yet, so selfish I, That mom and noon and night, an endless day, I do so ask and beg and even dare To proffer bribe of half-remembered prayer. But what price prayer from lips unused to pray? Lord, of Thy love, deal gently with my son, —Oh, he is young and strong and bravely gay— And grant that I may humbly learn to say, If need be, in dark days, “Thy will be done.”
