GIFTS OF FOOD

PARCELS FOR BRITAIN CONDITIONS OF DESPATCH (By Tolf*crr, pri.—Pr»»>« Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Recent advices from the United Kingdom Ministry of Food indicated that conditions relating to the receipt of gifts of food from persons abroad had been reviewed, said the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, in a statement last evening. In accordance with this recent advice, New Zealand conditions governing the sending of gifts of food to residents in the United Kingdom had been determined as follows: General permission is given for the ' despatch by parcel post of bona fide j unsolicited gifts of any type of food suitable for transmission by parcel post from private individuals in New Zealand or other British forces overseas and to private persons resident in the United Kingdom. Permission cannot be granted for the export to private persons in the United Kingdom of quantities of any foodstuffs j beyond the weight-limit for parcel j post. Above Parcel Limit Where well-wishers in New Zea- j land desire to send quantities of foodstuffs in excess of the weightlimit for parcel post, the following conditions, laid down by the United Kingdom Ministry of Food, must be complied with:—Such large quantities of foodstuffs must not include •tioned foods, and donors must first range for some responsible organition formed for charitable or other similar purposes in the United Kingdom to be the recipient of such gifts. The recipient must then apply to the United Kingdom Ministry of Food for a license to import ,and the recipient organisation will be required to give an undertaking that the goods will be consumed within the organisation. In addition, application for permission to export such larger ) quantities cf foodstuffs must be made ! in accordance with the provisions of ; the Export Prohibition Emergency Regulations, 1939, to the Collector of j Customs at the intended port of shipment in New Zealand, said Mr Nash. Each application would be considered on its merits, taking into i account such matters as the availability of shipping space and the kind of food.
