QUEEN CARNIVAL

MONSTER PARADE COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMME COMPETITIONS AND DISPLAYS A comprehensive programme including a grand patriotic parade and sports carnival to be held at the Hamilton Lake on Saturday, November 9, has been arranged by the Citizens’ Queen Carnival Committee. Though the carnival is being organised by the Citizens’ Committee, the net proceeds will be shared equally among the Citizens’, Country and Nurses’ Queen Committees. Many organisations have indicated their willingness to co-operate. The outstanding feature of the carnival will be a grand parade of decorated vehicles, sports bodies, St. John Ambulance, Women’s Auxiliary Volunteer Corps, Fire Brigade, schoolchildren, local bodies, business firms, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and bands. The carnival committee is hoping for the interest and support of business firms, and that the number of decorated vehicles will be worthy of the business community. Variety of Attractions A regatta is to be organised by Mr R. Worley, to include model yacht and mechanical boat racing. The Hamilton Golf Club has appointed a committee to organise miniature golf competitions. Offers of assistance have been received also from the South Auckland Swimming Association, which will arrange special swimming events. A programme of miniature games is being drawn up by Mr L. Cross and Miss R. Stephenson, district organisers to the Department of Physical Welfare. Other features of the monster carnival will be a fancy dress competition, national dancing, a display by the St. John Ambulance, inter-house tugs-of-war, combined band concert, and a bonfire and fireworks display if this can be arranged. In view of the number of organisations taking part and the wide appeal of the programme, the carnival committee expects that if it receives the public support it deserves the programme will prove one of the most outstanding series of entertainments ever to have been presented in Hamilton.

CITIZENS’ QUEEN CHILDREN’S CARNIVALS Keen interest in the queen carnival was displayed at a meeting of the Citizens’ Queen Committee held last night, and a lengthy programme recommended by the entertainment committee was enthusiastically adopted. Three general schemes were outlined by Mrs H. C. Ross, comprising a childrens’ carnival, a monster patriotic parade (in which the three Hamilton queens’ committees would take part), and a programme of patriotic dances and card evenings. The first scheme aims at recruiting school children’s interest by a children’s queen carnival, involving such activities as an egg collecting campaign} a flower show, and a ‘‘bot-tle-day ” collection. The “ Bottle Day,” which was originally intended to be held on October 19, has now been advanced to November 16. Boy Scouts on that day will make a house-to-house canvass for empty bottles. The children’s part in the queen carnival is to be considered at a special meeting of the Headmasters’ Association to be held on Tuesday evening. Other functions include a soldiers’ concert to be held in the Theatre Royal on October 24 and a mock court to take place towards the end of November. In addition it is hoped to have a copper trail and a surprise packet drive.
