WOMEN’S GOLF
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The club championships were commenced on the St. Andrews links last Wednesday. It was disappointing that several of the senior members were unable to play, as this rather spoilt the interest in the senior qualifying round. The junior members, however, turned out splendidly and had a most enjoyable day. In the morning the weather somewhat militated against good scoring, the players finding the high wind most trying. Fortunately it calmed down during the afternoon and conditions for the first round of match play were more pleasant. The best gross round of the day, Mrs Mander’s 80, was a very good effort under the conditions. Mrs McDonald, with an 85, which was slightly under her average, came second, while Mrs S. Bennett and Mrs Batt both played well on to their handicaps to card 86’s. The three best scores in the junior division, Mrs Berry 96, Mrs King 97, and Mrs Daldy 98, were very satisfactory, but the rest of the scoring was disappointing. The only good card in the Gillies’ Vase division came from Mrs Beattie, who turned in a card of 97, playing 1 under her handicap. Some Close Games In the afternoon the match play provided some close games and a few surprises. In the seniors Mrs D. I. Day improved on her form of the morning to account for Mrs Waring 3up and 2. Miss Bruce, who plays on an 18 handicap, staged a surprise by beating Mrs Sommerville, who is on the 11 mark, by 2 up. The latter player was not happy on the greens all day. In the juniors the closest match proved that between Miss Cann and Mrs Toombs. This was decided in Miss Cann’s favour by a putt on the last green. Mrs Worley beat Mrs Signal by the narrow margin of 3 up and 1 after an interesting game, while Mrs Thomas accounted for Mrs Jewell after a hard-fought match by 2 and 1. Mrs Melvin’s margin of 6 up and 5 over Mrs Daldy was unexpectedly large. In the Gillies’ Vase division three matches went the whole course or more. Mrs McCullagh beat Mrs Beange by a putt on the last green, while the matches between Mrs Morrison and Mrs Hilton, and Mrs Ellis and Mrs Christie both went to the 19th, finishing in favour of the former players in each case. The second rounds and semi-fin-als will be played next Wednesday, while the rest of the club will play a Stableford Bogey competition. The finals will be played on Thursday. L.G.U. Medal Competition The L.G.U. medal competition played by the week-end players last Saturday was won by Mrs O’Connor 90—15 —75, with Miss A. Wilson 94—14—80, in second place. We offer our congratulations for good performances by two players during the week. Mrs Seyb turned in a splendid score of 75 gross, equalling the ladies’ record for the course, and reducing her handicap to 6. Mrs Seyb’s card read:— Out 36445444 4—38 In 44452555 3—37 This is only one stroke over the bogey for the course, and three strokes over the scratch score. We are also pleased to note a good round of 89 gross done by Mrs Thomas, who thus reduces her handicap to 19, and has a card in for the senior division. We are confident that Mrs Thomas is a golfer who will steadily improve with experience.
