THE WINDSORS
GREETED BY BISHOP DENIAL OF SNUBBING (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) NASSAU, Aug. 21 The Duke and Duchess of Windsor attended the Anglican Cathedral during their visit to Hamilton (Bermuda) and were greeted warmly by Bishop Browne, who, in 1938, expressed strong disapproval of their marriage by tearing up their picture. Bishop Browne later denied that he had snubbed the Duke and Duchess during the arrival ceremonies and deprecated such cruel rumours. The Duke and Duchess were entertained at a cocktail party at Admiralty House, but the Bishop, although invited, did not attend. The British authorities did not interfere with three Germans who were travelling on the American liner, Excalibur, which brought the Duke and Duchess of Windsor from Europe. Whether this was because of the presence of the Windsors or in deference to American neutrality is not known. The Germans went on to New York.
The Excalibur was not convoyed. The Duke was informally attired, wearing a straw hat and light grey suit. The Duchess wore a pink and blue crepe all-over dress, with a royal blue full length coat.
