TE RAPA GALLOPS

YOUNG PADDON IMPRESSES SIX FURLONGS IN 1.22 3-5 DARK ROSE SCHOOLS WELL

(By “Martian”) The going on the course proper at Te Rapa this morning, 33 feet out from the rails, was dead and not conducive to fast times. However, some useful work was accomplished, a feature of the morning being a sound six furlongs by the Jellicoe Handicap candidate, Young Paddon. Among the jumpers, Dark Rose impressed in a schooling trial over a section of the steeplechase country. The Nightly three-year-old in the Seifert stable was doing better than Kallatopea (Meynell) in a three furlong dash which occupied 38$s, a useful effort. Both executed their work pleasingly and are making good progress.

Beau Repaire (Hall) and Marshall Hall (Bartles) were associated in au easy seven furlongs which they traversed in 1.44. Both these members of the Julian string are bearing a healthy appearance and should be in splendid order when called upon to race.

Olympus (Ramsay), who appears to be the most forward of the Julian stable, negotiated an easy six furlongs, being timed to negotiate his first half-mile in 58s. He will probably do his next racing at Avondale. A Solid Trial Young Paddon (O. Mclnally) hit out alone over six furlongs in 1.22 3-5. He ran his first three furlongs in 37$s, the half-mile in 53 4-5 s and five furlongs in 1.8. Altogether it was a pleasing effort on the part of Young Paddon who should be in excellent fettle for his Jellicoe Handicap engagement on Saturday. He has gone on the right way since winning so convincingly at Rotorua several weeks ago. Acute (Gollop) was clear of Sporting Ace (Howard) and a filly by The Ace, in the Tutchen stable over three furlongs in 38$s, a useful effort for horses of their class. African (O. Mclnaly) got to the end of five furlongs in 1.12, his first half-mile being traversed in 575. He is coming to hand nicely. The three-year-old Cape Egmont and a two-year-old by Vaals required 59s for h^lf-a-mile. Black Musk (Muir), who is looking a picture of condition, was restricted to strong three-quarter pace work, running once round in 2.20 3-5. Ii will not be on the score of condition if he fails to show up in the Jellicoe Handicap. Raceline (Meynell) finished clear of Tooley Street (McGregor) over the deciding stages of a round in 2.12. Both executed their work pleasingly and Tooley Street, who has been working consistently well of late, drew attention to his prospects at the Pakuranga Hunt this week. Game’s Choice Well Game’s Choice (Winder) was doing better than Calshot (Long) and Re-, quiem (Hain) at the conclusion of a round in 2.14. Both Gaine’s Choice and Calshot should show to advantage in the Ladies’ Bracelet on Saturday. Sieglinde (Brown) was a length in front of Gay Rosette (O’Mclnally) over the deciding stages of five furlongs m 1.9 1-5. Sieglinde did her work well and is not without prospects in the first division of the Sylvia Park Handicap on Saturday. Abbey King (Brown) got to the end of six furlongs in 1.26. He is bearing a healthy appearance. Among those to be allotetd strong work were Cappy, Etcetera and Forest Acre.

Dark Rose (Goulsbro) was schooled over three fences of the steeplechase course, the sod wall by the half-mile, the brush by the three furlongs and the sod wall entering the straight, and executed his work in dashing style. Dark Rose has been out with the Waikato Hunt on several occasions lately and the progress he has made since winning at Matamata entitles him to consideration in the Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles on Saturday. Midland (Curran) was schooled over four flights of hurdles and accomplished his work pleasingly. He is in good order for his Pakuranga engagement. Sunny Downs (Curran) was schooled over the pony fences along the back but his display was not impressive. Riding Engagements A. Gilmer: Kinkle, Tutor. O. Mclnally: Young Paddon, Gay Rosette, Etcetera, Rival. H. Long: Hunters’ Night, Valimeen, My General.
