CLOSE CONTEST

GOLF SEMI-FINALS MRS MCDONALD’S GOOD FORM SOUTH AUCKLAND TOURNEY

An excellent standard of golf was attained in the semi-finals of the South Auckland women’s championships at St. Andrews links today when Mrs H. McDonald, of Hamilton and Miss M. Jefferd, of Hastings, met in an exceptionally keen contest. The Hamilton player won the match at the 18th hole to enter the final this afternoon against Mrs P. R. Glanville, of Te Awamutu, the title holder. Both Mrs McDonald and Miss Jefferd are on the 4 handicap and their play has been consistent throughout the tournament. They played almost down to their handicap form today, Mrs McDonald’s round being 80 and Miss Jefferd’s 81. Although Mrs McDonald secured an early lead in winning the first two holes, Miss Jefferd maintained a grip on her form until she squared at the sixteenth, where she played brilliant golf. In bogey s’s the 17th was halved and Mrs McDonald won the match with a 12ft putt for a birdie 3 on the 18th. Nearly In One As was expected, Mrs Glanville entered the final by defeating Mrs Seyb, of Hamilton, in the other semifinal. She was one up at the turn, going out in 42. She went further to the lead with victories at the 10th, 11th, and 13th. At the 14th hole Mrs Seyb almost caused a sensation when her tee shot just failed to drop into the cup. As it was she secured a birdie two. At the 15th, which was halved, the match ended in a victory to Mrs Granville, 4 and 3.

FULLY EXTENDED TITLE-HOLDER’S NARROW WIN Leading competitors were fully extended in the second round of the South Auckland golf championships at St. Andrews links yesterday afternoon. Miss M. Jefferd, of Hastings, who had displayed excellent form in the initial rounds of match play was hard pressed to secure victory over Miss Beverley, of Matamata, whose six handicap is two strokes behind the mark of the Hastings player. The champion, Mrs P. R. Glanville, secured another victory although Mrs S. Bennett played remarkably well to hold the title-holder down to a 2 and 1 victory. Mrs Bennett plays on a 13 handicap, whereas Mrs Glanville is rated on the six mark. Although Mrs Seyb is not such a low handicap player as Mrs F. Mander, the form she displayed in the qualifying rounds indicated that she might defeat the former champion, who will now be out of the final for the first time in several seasons. As was expected Mrs McDonald secured a fairly comfortable margin over Mrs Wilson. Results of play in the second round yesterday afternoon are as follows: Ellis Cup Second Round (championship play):—Mrs P. R. Granville beat Mrs S. Bennett, 2 and 1; Mrs Seyb beat Mrs F. Mander, 3 and 2; Miss Jefferd beat Miss N. Beverley, 1 up; Mrs H. McDonald beat Mrs J. Wilson, 5 and 4. Fraser Cup Second Round (handicap play).— Mrs F. Lloyd beat Mrs C. F. O’Connor, 3 and 1; Miss M. Campbell beat Mrs W. Waring, 1 up; Miss S. Banks beat Mrs Costello, 5 and 4; Mrs V. D. Edwards beat Mrs W. P Endean. 5 and 4. Flight Match Second Round (handicap play).— Mrs Meredith beat Miss J. Littleproud, 2 and 1; Mrs F. H. Taylor beat Miss E. Wright, 1 up at the 18th; Mrs Qualtrough beat Mrs Berry, ft and 4; Mrs L. Chitty beat Mrs H. H. Toombs, 1 up at the* 18th. The Stableford bogey competition played yesterday afternoon resulted in a victory to Mrs H. D. Johnston with a score of 32. Other good cards were Mrs S. Wilson 31, Mrs V. D. Edwards and Miss E. Madeley 29. Mrs Gable won the junior Stableford bogey with a score of 28, winning on the count back from Mrs A. E. Sandford, who returned a similar score. Results of the semi-finals were as follows: Ellis Cup Mrs P. R. Glanville (Te Awamutu) beat Mrs Seyb (Hamilton), 4 and 3. Mrs H. McDonald (Hamilton) beat Miss M. Jefferd (Hastings), 1 up. Fraser Cup Mrs B. Lloyd beat Miss M. Campbell, 2 up. Mrs V. D. Edwards beat Miss S. Banks, 1 up. Flight Match Mrs L.
