SLAUGHTERING COSTS

CHARGES AT HOROTIU WORKS COMPLAINT TO COUNCIL “At a recent meeting of the members of the South Auckland Master Butchers’ Industrial Union of Employers who are users of the Horotiu abattoir.” stated a letter from the union which was received at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night, “the opinion was expressed that the charge made by the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company for slaughtering and dressing overweight calves is excessive. It is contended that calves up to 4001 b should be charged at a lower rate than the present 9s lOd a head.” The public demand for smaller joints had increased the slaughtering of heavy vealers and the high charge for that class of cattle was automatically reflected in the retail prices of those smaller joints. The quality of the work done in the dressing of meat had also fallen considerably and the council was asked to give attention to the matter. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, it was decided to receive the letter and forward it to the company. Mr W. R. Shattock said that the butchers thought that 9s lOd for a beast that went as much as lib over 2001 b was excessive. It was also felt that it was unjust to the consumers of meat in the district.
