BASE HOSPITAL

SISTER IN CHARGE FORMER HAMILTONIAN ESTABLISHMENT IN ENGLAND The announcement that the first base hospital for New Zealand troops in England had been established was particularly interesting to Hamiltonians in view ,of the fact that Sister E. Mackay, formerly of the Waikato Hospital staff, has been appointed matron. Sister Mackay, who was trained at Napier, was a sister at the Waikato Hospital for 12 years, and was one of four sisters from the hospital who went overseas with the second echelon. There are 33 sisters and two masseuses on the staff at the base hospital. Sister Mackay’s appointment is a tribute to the excellent training she had received at the Waikato Hospital. Miss M. Mackay, the Hamilton District Plunket nurse, is a sister of Sister Mackay. Erected and furnished by the British Government the base hospital is in a woodland area in a southern county. Mild sickness cases have already entered as first patients. The buildings and equipment are all brand new, the buildings consisting of 14 separate single-storey blocks, all connected by covered outdoor passageways. Colonel A. C. McKillop is officer commanding, Lieutenant-Colonel T. D. M. Stout is director of the medical division, Major L. J. Hunter is registrar and there are 15 other officers. Fire-resisting material has been used throughout the building of nine blocks of wards, each with 36 beds, and service rooms attached. The wards are heated by coke stoves and each has its own water installation. The theatre is thoroughly modern and centrally heated. Cooking arrangements and equipment are oi the best.
