Presbytery Condolence The Waikato Presbytery at its meeting yesterday carried a vote of condolence with the family of the late Mr T. Thompson, a former member of the Presbytery. Women Learn Rifle Shooting Conscious of the value of preparedness in home defence, many women are taking steps to learn rifle shooting, “just in case,” says a Sydney paper. Girl’s Coughing Ends in Death fcEdna May Saunders, 23-year-old waitress, swallowed a dental plate during a coughing fit in Perth, and died of suffocation before a doctor arrived. A post-mortem disclosed the plate in her throat. Bankruptcies in Wanganui Two bankruptcies were recorded in Wanganui during June, compared with none for June, 1939. Six bankruptcies were registered for the six months this year, compared with eight for the same period of 1939. Farmer Injured A fractured leg was received by a farmer, Mr Cyril Henry Bremner, aged 40, of Te Kauwhata, as the result of being attacked by a pig, which he whs ringing at his farm yesterday afternoon. He was admitted to the Waikato Hospital. Restriction on Aliens The possession by aliens of arms of any description, including shotguns, and of ammunition, is prohibited by regulations gazetted last night. They also impose a prohibition on the possession of explosives by any person except with a permit. Sovereign Worth £2 8s lid It was announced by the Commonwealth Bank in Sydney the other clay that the price of gold had been reduced by 6d a fine ounce, making the price £AIO 12s 9d. The change in price was the first since February 6. Sovereigns were now worth £2 8s lid. Parishioners’ Roll The annual Synod of the Waikato Diocese decided yesterday that it should be a direction to all churchwardens throughout the Waikato Diocese that copies of the list of names of parishioners registered in the churchwardens’ roll book as at January 31 in each year, be sent to the Diocesan office on or before February 28 in each year. New Waterfront System Contract conditions for the loading and unloading of all overseas ships will apply at Wellington from July 10, and at Bluff and Timaru from July 15. Negotiations are in progress at other ports for the adoption of the co-operative contract system, according to a statement by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb. Blue Light On Vehicles Ihe necessity for vehicles whose width exceeded seven feet and whose length exceeded 20 feet requiring to show a blue light was stressed in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today, when two charges relating to breaches of the regulation were heard before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M. The regulation has been in force since June of last year. Cecil H<erne, of Newstead, and Robert Manning, of Morrinsville, were each fined 10s for failing to show a blue light. Mr J. R. Fow “Knighted” During the Coronation ceremony in Auckland last night of the Queen of the Auckland Province, Mrs Gordon Matthews, of Hamilton, the Queen bestowed “Honours” on the chairmen of the committees supporting the various queens. The committee chairmen were Ambassadors to their various Queens. The only Hamiltonian to be “knighted” was Mr J. R. Fow, chairman of the South Queen’s committee, who had the honour of the knighthood of Good Samaritans conferred on him.
Bigger Than Politics “I have not any politics just now,” stated Mr W. J. Polsen, M.P., at a meeting sponsored by the Wairoa branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, when remarking that it might seem curious to those present that a critic of the Government, such as himself, and a member of the National Party, should be touring the country and addressing farmers at the request of the Government. Mr Poison said that he was involved in bigger things, that of organising the farmers in an endeavour to increase production in New Zealand.
Wool Fashions Arrangements have been made between the National Patriotic Council and the New Zealand Wool Council for a tour of the Dominion of the main feature of the latter council’s exhibit at the Centennial Exhibition, the whole of the proceeds to be devoted to patriotic purposes. The display, which will be in the nature of a fashion parade embracing a collection of woollen georgettes, voiles, taffetas and lames, together with a wide range of dresses establishing the suitability of wool for every occasion, will be held in the Bledisloe Hall, Hamilton, to-night and to-morrow night. Hamilton East Ratepayers
Although some difficulty was encontered in securing a nomination for the position of secretary, the Hamilton East Ratepayers’ Association decided at the annual meeting last night that the activities of the body should be carried on, especially as there would be an election for the seats on the Borough Council next year. Mr H. G. Young was elected president, but when no secretary could be secured to replace Mr L. Johnston, who resigned, Mr Young resigned the presidency to take the secretaryship so that the position would be filled. The officers elected for the year were —President, Mr W. Bourne; vicepresidents, Messrs L. Johnston and K. Johnstone; secretary, Mr H. G. Young; treasurer, Mr J. Boyd; auditor, Mr K. Johnstone; executive committee, Messrs F. Best, W. A. Curteis, L. W. Goodwin, J. H. Boyd, J. Nicholas, W. Bourne, H. G. Young, K. Johnstone, L. Johnston.
