HAND BLOWN OFF
MAORI’S EXPERIENCE EXPLOSION OF DETONATORS (Special to Times) WHAKATANE, Thursday Mr John Wineti, a Maori, aged 39, of Tarao, was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition suffering from injuries to his face and his right hand blown off. Mr Wineti was drying a fuse by a fire, near which were lying detonators and gelignite. The gelignite ignited, causing the detonators to explode. After the accident Mr Wineti was still conscious, and crawled about a quarter of a mile to a ditch, soaking his arm in the water. He was found there by two of his sons.
