WOMEN POLICE

REPORT ON SYSTEM MR FRASER TO INVESTIGATE WANGANUI, Thursday Explaining in an interview today the position regarding the appointment of women police in New Zealand, the Commissioner of Police, Mr D. J. Cummings, who is visiting Wanganui, said much would depend on the type of candidate offering if it were decided to appoint women to the force. Legislation had been passed last year giving authority for the appointment of women. He had investigated the system thoroughly on his recent visit to Australia, and made a report to the Minister in Charge of the Police Department, the Hon. P. Fraser. The Minister would himself make a further investigation during his visit to England. When he returned the question of making appointments would be considered.
