NATIONAL CLUB

CELEBRATION EVENING | MEMBERSHIP OF 1000 ATTAINED | ! it was with extreme gratification 1 I that the committee of the National ! i; 1 ul) arranged an informal evening on j , Saturday night at the club rooms to . | celebrate the enrolment of the j I thousandth member. This progressive 1 club, which is filling a very necessa-y need in the town, now incorporates a large luxuriously-furnished lounge, an equally large social hall which has been completely renovated, a suitably- 1 furnished and equipped nursery with j a trained attendant, and a buffet for j the serving of morning and afternoon i teas. In addition, in the near future, ! there will be a men’s smoking room | and a men’s writing room. Consider- j ing the club is yet in its infancy, the ! committee is to be congratulated on i the foresight and energetic co-opera- j lion with which it has achieved such excellent results. The seating capacity of the social \ hall was insufficient* to accommodate the large number of members, many of whom, seated in the lounge, listened to the proceedings through amplifiers. Hearty congratulations were received j by the club on the attainment of its j thousandth member from Mr W S.. Goosman. M.P., Mr A. W. Grant (Te i A roll a . Mr W. Sullivan (Opo-tiki . Mr 1 A. Sutherland Ngaruawahia), Mrs V. E. Wilson tupotiki;, Mr F. Short I’Opotiki), and Air W. C. Kennedy Te Arolia). All the speakers expressed their confidence in the leader of the National Party, Ihe Hon. Adam Hamilton, and gave interesting addresses on the various aspects of political life in New Zealand. At the conclusion of the speeches I the thousandth member was honoured by the presentation of a large box of chocolates, and the serving of a delicious supper concluded a happy function.
