Film Actress to Marry It is announced in Hollywood that the film actress, Miss Madge Evans, is to marry Mr Sidney Kingsley, a playwright, late in June. Miss Evans says she may end her work in the films. King Country Licensing The Taurnarunui Borough Council has convened a meeting of local bodies in the King 'Country to consider the licensing question. The Te Kuiti Borough Council at its. last meeting decided to send several representatives. New Company The following private company has been registered in Auckland. M&tua Delayed An exceptionally stormy voyage from Suva was experienced by the Union Company’s Island motor-ship Matua, which reached Auckland on Tuesday night. A south-westerly gale was encountered for the greater part of the journey. No damage was done beyond delaying the steamer, which has brought a large shipment of island fruit. Whangarei Sewerage Loan The Whangarei Borough Council has been advised that the Local Body Loans Board has sanctioned a loan of £33,630 for the extensions to the sewerage system and the provision of stormwater drainage in the borough. The interest rate is 41 per cent. A poll of the ratepayers is to be held. The scheme has been approved by the Public Works Department. Loan for Te Kuiti The Te Kuiti Borough Council has received a copy of an Urder-in-Councfi authorising the water works improvement loan of £30,000. The nr. is for work required hv the Board of Health to be carried out. A scheme for water works improvements was rejected by ratepayers at a poll in 1937. A committee of inquiry subsequently held an investigation into the town's water supply. Trentham Not Available The Trentham camp will not be available for accommodation for exservicemen who wish to attend the Centennial celebrations at Wellington, according to a reply received by Mr F. L. Frost, M.P., from the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones. The request was made originally following a suggestion at a reunion of South African War veterans at New Plymouth, but the Minister states that Trentham camp provides barely sufficient accommodation for the requirements of the defence services. Pohutu Geyser Active Playing continuously for a period of eight hours 20 minutes the Pohutu geyser at Whakarewarewa provided an unusual spectacle for visitors to the thermal area yesterday, it was the longest continuous display given by the geyser lor a number of years. Displays of shorter duration*were given on Sunday, and at 7.45 a.m. yesterday activity again commenced with the shot reaching up to a height of about 90ft. The cauldron continued to show unusual activity and it is thought likely that the displays might be continued for some days. Compulsory Training Urged A meeting representative of the Mangcmui County Council, the Kaitaia Town Board, the .Kaitaia Defence Rille Club, and the Returned Soldiers’ Association, passed a resolution urging on the Government the necessity for the reintroduction of compulsory military training. Representatives spoke in favour of compulsory training, although it was thought that in the event of war there would be no lack of volunteers. The Government’s policy came in for much criticism, some speakers maintaining that it had fallen down on its job.

Company’s Huge Profits The financial year of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, Limited, the largest industrial enterprise in Australia, closed at the end of last month. The profit, which is usually announced toward the end of July, is expected to be around, if not (greater than, last year’s record of £1,300,467. Among the most noteworthy events in the year were the record output of the Newcastle steel works, the closing down of the old silver-lead mine at Broken Hill, and the proposal to establish a £3,000,000 tinplate manufacturing industry. Mail On Wrecked Flying-boat The Chief Post Office advises that only 851 b. of New Zealand mail was carried on the flying-boat Centurion, which was wrecked at Bally (India) on Monday. This was despatched by the Kairanga from Auckland on June 1, and would include postings made after the despatch of the mail by the Aorangi on May 31. A Press Association message states that there were no Wellington mails on board the •Centurion. The only New Zealand mails being carried by the flying-boat were those from Auckland and surrounding districts, despatched by the Kairanga on June 1.

Work on Homer Tunnel Because of a heavy fall of snow in Jlollyford Valley, it has been decided to work only one daylight shift at the Homer Tunnel for the rest of the winter. Hitherto three shifts have been working continuously, but, acting on Ihe advice of the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, who visited the project recently, all precautions are being taken. A look-out man will be continually on the watch for any signs of an avalanche. An extra portal has been constructed, which leads from the workshops right into the tunnel, so that the workmen have no fear of being caught in a fall of snow duriDg their work.
