PUBLIC OPINION

As expressed by correspondents whose letters are welcome, but for whose views we have no responsibility. Correspondents are requested to write in ink. It is essential that anonymous writers enclose their proper names as a guarantee of •good faith. Unless this rule is complied with, their letters Avill not appear. DEFENCE LEAGUE SCHEME (To the Editor) Sir, —Permit me to point out to Mr J. R. Fow that when a number of people join any particular movement, a Defence League, for example, they are all agreed upon the objective in view, but the “motive” for joining is determined by one's social and economic environment. For instance, one person may link up with the league to maintain and preserve the rights and liberties relative to trade unionism. Y'et another may join to maintain conditions which make it possible for the “creating” of huge interest-bearing war loans. So I will submit the following questions to Mr Fow. Of course, his social and economic environment will determine his reply—(l) Is ho in favour of an alliance with Russia? (2) Does he stand four-square for debt-free money for all defence purposes ? (3; Is he in favour of equal pay for equal service, irrespective of sex? (4) Is lie in favour of maintaining an economic organisation which determines the creating of huge interestbearing war loans?—l am, etc., HARRY WOODRUFFE. Auckland. December 30.
