OLD HOMESTEAD BURNED

DESTRUCTION NEAR TIMARU BRIGADE’S IMPOSSIBLE TASK (By Telegraph—Press Associate) TIMARU, Friday A well-known homestead nearly 70 years old, the Luxmoore homestead, just north of Timaru, was totally destroyed by a spectacular fire early this "morning. It was occupied by Mr and Mrs Fahey, but the former was away on holidays and only Mrs Fahey was home with two children and a sister. The noise of the fire awoke Mrs Fahey soon after 3 o’clock. She immediately called the Timaru brigade, which left for the scene at once. By the time the'brigade arrived the centre of the roof had fallen in and, fanned by a strong wind, the flames soon made a save of the house itself impossible. It was all the brigade could do to save some outhouses and only one dressing-table was brought intact out of the building. Much valuable furniture was lost but the insurance figures are not available. The house was associated with early South Canterbury history, being built on the estate of Mr P. B. Luxmoore, an early settler from England.
