WELL EXTENDED DOMINION TITLE-HOLDERS CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday The element of 'surprise which had hern a feature of play in the - Canterbury lawn tennis championships nearly upset calculations to-day for .T. W. Gunn and Viss Margaret Beverley, Dominion title-holders, were extended to the utmost in their quarter-final match. Twice they trailed behind in the third set and perhaps they were rather lucky that their opponents lapsed into errors. The weather was sunny when play resumed to-day hut a cross-court wind was a factor which had to he taken into account, especially in lohhing exchanges. The courts had dried out splendidly from the soaking they received over the week-end. Results:— • Mixed Doubles Quarter Finals: .1. \Y. Gunn and Miss M. Beverley heat C. F. Penfold and Miss N. Beverley. 6—2. 3 -6. 9—7: A. R. Cant and Miss I. Poole heal T. W. Patterson and Miss M. Wake B—6. 6—2: R. G. Pattinson and Miss K. Armstrong beat If. Dyrnond and Mrs V. C. Browne, G —2, 6—o. Men’s Doubles Quarter Finals: J. T. Mayson and J. W. Gunn beat H. Dymond and I. J. Corish, 6—4, 6 —i: H. A. Barnett and A. R. Cant beat W. Smith and T. D. C. Childs, I—6, 6—l, 6—l. '
