FERGUSSON TO VERY GLAD SMOKE SCREEN’S RECORD ROYEVRUS’ SURPRISE WIN (Special from “Martian") AUCKLAND, Wednesday The summer carnival of the Auckland .Racing Club entered its second day at Ellerslie racecourse to-day in bright sunshine and before a great attendance. Winner trained by owner, Cambridge. Waikato stables provided the first and second horses in the opening event, Very Glad jumping out smartly from barrierrise to score an end-io-end success. The consistent Balinavar made a courageous showing but weight told its tale in the last little bit. while the ravouri Good Passage, had every chance but failed to go on with it. Balinavar burst through the tapes on two occasions and caused a delay of some minutes, Pocket Venus leading out from Very Glad, Coronation and Balinavar. Within 200 yards. Very Glad was in charge from Balinavar and Pocket Venus, with Rajanya handy in Tront of Melvanui, Good Passage. Coronation and Spinning Wheel. Very Glad was followed by Pocket Venus across the top and this pair led into the straight rrom Balinavar, Good Passage and Rajanya. Very Glad held on in the run home to withstand the hot challenge or Balinavar and beat him by a head. The ravourlte. Good Passage, was only a neck away third. Spinning Wheel was rourth, in front or Melvanui, Coronation, Pocket Venus and Erlick, with Rajanya bringing up the rear. Time, 1.38 3-5. Winner trained by J. F. Tutchen, Te Rapa. Stansted, who has been racing consistently this season, ran up to his best form when, drawing to the front at the halfmile, he went on to win attractively. Tutor, went a solid race, while Chikara was battling on over the last furlong. Hopalong made a faulty jump at the last fence and thus settled whatever prospects he may have possessed. ■Sirrom roll at the fence at the six furlong peg, broke his leg and was destroyed. The favourite, Little Briton, fell at the fence before Sirrom’s mishap.

.Ngakaru with a brilliant burst of speed soon put up a break on the Held or some fifteen lengths and racing past the stands was out ten lengths rrom Tutor, Sirrom, Hopalong, Stansted, Makoi, Little Briton, Chikara and Aramls with Small Boy bringing up the rear. Ngakaru was hafi-a-dozen lengths in Tront of Tutor with Stansted moving up into third position in front of Centaurus. Stansted continued his run and at the hair-mile was just in front of Tutor with Ngakaru two lengths away in front of Hopalong, Chikara. Makoi and Small Boy. Stansted had established a lead over Tutor as they turned Tor home and taking the last Tence was clear ana carried on to win by two lengths from Tutor with Chlsara three lengths away tnird. Hopalong was fourth followed by Makoi. Smau Boy, Baldric, Electric Flash, Centaurus, Ngakaru, who had stopped to a walk. Shy was pulled up earlier in the race. Time, 3.14. Cutting out the mile in 1.35 3-5, Smoke Screen put up a brilliant performance to set new figures for the distance. His finishing run was characterised by outstanding courage, especially in view of the torrid pace set early by Te Hero, who cut out the llrst hair-mile in 47 l-ss. Stretto made a gallant attempt and was not disgraced in going under hy hair-a-head in a spectacular finish. Te Hero was responsible lor the rast pace set, hitting the front almost immediately and he carried the field along to hairway down the running, where he commenced to weaken and eventually finished iirth. The time, 1.35 3-5, was a New Zealand record, beating the 1.3 0 held conjointly by Courtcrart (in this race year; and oratory. The Australasian record for the mile is 1.35*. Smoke Screen jumped out in front of Te Hero and Gay Son, but Te Hero was soon in charge and led along the back from Gay Son, smoke Screen, Hot Box, Stretto, Beaupartir and Courtcraft. Te Hero was out one length rrom -moke screen as they raced to the mile, with Gulden Sheila following in front of Stretto, Gay Son, Beaupartir, Hot Box and Couricrart. There was no alteration as they raced to the turn, Smoke Screen winning by hall -a-hcad from Stretto, with Gay son a neck away third. PROTEST DISMISSED

RUNNING OF ROUND-UP The inquiry which was continued by the judicial committee of the Auckland Racing Club to-day into the alleged interference by Round Up, who ran second in the Auckland Cup on Monday, culminated, in the committee finding that there was no case to answer.
