PEDESTRIANS IN PERIL
MOTORIBTS ON CROBBINQ6 THREE FINES IMPOSED Failure to stop in order to give right of way to pedestrians using the pedestrian crossings in Victoria Street led to three motorists being convicted and fined £5 each by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Hamilton, to-day. Mr W. E. Nicholson, traffic inspector, of the Hamilton Borough Council, prosecuted. Harold H. Inues, an officer of the Internal Marketing Division, Wellington, was charged with committing the offence on April 30. At the time two people were proceeding from the centre of the street to the footpath. Innes had to swerve to avoid them. He was stopped by a traffic inspector and denied committing a breach. Later Innes admitted that it was an offence. William Douglas Hutchison, of Frankton. charged with a similar offence, pleaded not guilty, submitting that he was not driving his car at the time. The number of the car was taken by John R. Fow, of Hamilton, who, in evidence, said he held up his hand to stay the vehicle but the car rushed past close to him swerving and almost colliding with a second pedestrian. Defendant said he had lent his car to another person on that day. "I do not think you are telling the truth," commented the magistrate in convicting the defendant and imposing a fine of £5.
Colin Shaw, of Tamahere, was similarly charged, and was also convicted, and fined £5.
