MARLENE DIETRICH

FOOTLIGHT FLASHES

TO LEAVE UNITED STATES LATE FILMS NOT SUCCESSFUL (From a Correspondent) NEW YORK, February 13 Marlene Dietrich, whose Hollywood films used to earn her £50,000 each, has broken with Paramount Films. Mr Adolph Zukor, chairman of Paramount, announced after a talk with Marlene that it had been decided to postpone indefinitely “French Without Tears,” the script of which she had previously said she disliked. Mr Zukor added that Marlene will be permitted to work elsewhere and the expectation is that she will fulfil her intention of going to Paris to work with Josef von Sternberg, the Austrian director. Saw Disney Premiere “Morocco” (made- in 1932) and “Shanghai Express” (1934) made a lot of money, but officials have indicated that Marlene’s later films cost so much to produce that the box-office returns were hardly commensurate with the expense. Marlene, who will be 33 on Monday, last night attended the premiere of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Walt Disney’s first full-length film. She said recently: “Only Something extremely interesting will keep me in Hollywood.”
