STAY-IN STRIKE.

DISPUTE IN AUSTRALIA. TROUBLE IN A COLLIERY. POLICE STOP DEMONSTRATION. United Press Assn.—Elec. lei. Copyright SYDNEY, July 30. Only a few of the men who commenced a stay-down strike at the “John Darling” colliery, Belmont, yesterday, have left the mine, either for personal or family reasons. The remainder are amusing themselves with cards and community -singing. The police to-day prevented 1500 miners and their wives and friends from making a demonstration at the top of the mine. The marchers included men from seven surrounding collieries, who bore down on the “ John Darling ” pit singing “ Tipperary ” and “ Solidarity For Ever ” and waving red flags. The police handled the situation tactfully, and no disorder occurred, although the police were subjected to considerable heckling and banter. The vice-president of the northern miners’ organisation, Mr Henry Scanlon, addressed the men and urged them to remain calm.
