TRAINING OF TEACHERS.

OVERCROWDED PROGRAMME. PROFESSOR’S SUGGESTION. (Special to Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Describing the training programme for elementary school teachers as overcrowded and advocating that a much freer hand should be given to the training colleges of the Dominion In formulating their policies, Professor I. L. Kandel, ol' Columbia University, New York, interviewed on teacher training and the university, suggested that New Zealand should consider the affiliation of training colleges with the university on the same basis as the law and medical schools affiliation. “I think New Zealand has to consider the affiliation of training colleges with the university, giving the colleges a much freer hand in determining their policies than they have now,” he said. “I look on the whole problem of training teachers as one of as much importance as training for any other profession, and. as teachers have more freedom, their responsibilities will increase.”
