FARMERS AND POLITICS.
POSITION KEENLY WATCHED. A STRENUOUS CONFERENCE. Commenting upon the Farmers’ Union conference liold in Wellington this week, Mr J. 11. Furniss, of the Waikato sub-provincial executive who returned to-day, stated that it was one of the most strenuous sittings for some years, mainly owing to the urgent national character of the matters under discussion. These included the control of the bobby calf industry, ihe compensating price campaign, economic conditions affecting farmers and Ihe advisability of taking political action. A very ini vesting feature was the. absence or any acrimonious discussion. whilo the questions which were debated aroused great interest owing to Hie increasing gravity of the fanners’ economic position in view of the rapidly rising costs and the increasing consolidation of Ihe non-farming industrial organisations. These conditions, said Mr Furniss. were reflected in the rapid growth of the Farmers’ Union especially so far as its membership was concerned. While no decision was arrived at as to what, political action should he taken, if any. Ihe position was being keenly watered with a view to taking such steps, as might be deemed necessary in the near future., be added.
