A message received in Canberra states that an exhaustive chYck by officers of the New Guinea Administration shows that 424 natives, adults and children of both sexes, have been missing since the volcanic eruption at Rabaul. It is feared that the majority are dead. About 50 bodies have already been recovered and buried. The remainder are believed to have been overwhelmed and to lie under the debris.
