A DIFFICULT TREBLE
Sir Roseberry won his double as favourite each time and Musketoon scored in the Cornwall as fifth favourite in a field of 13, the favourite (Barometer) being unplaced. Another comparatively successful year was 192 0, the occasion of Lochella’s double as first and second favourite respectively in the jumping events. The winner of the Cornwall in that year was Glen Canny, another fifth favourite, in a field of nine, the favourite (Mangarnahoe) being unplaced*. Five years ago backers were also fairly near the mark, as Landmark won the hurdles as favourite (his bracketed mate Make Up being second), and third favourites in Sunny Sky and Copey scored in the other “ legs ’’ of the treble. In 1934 when View Halloo won the Cornwall it marked the first success of a favourite in 14 years. One Whetu was also the public choice last year.
NORTHERNS AMD CORNWALL. FEW SUCCESSFUL FAVOURITES. LAST EIGHTEEN YEARS. The Great. Northern treble —the Hurdles and Cornwall Handicap on the first day and the Steeplechase on the second day—is not only one of the most popular of the year, but also it has always been probably the most difficult to pick correctly, as a glance at the record of the races is amply sufficient to show. In the last 18 contests, only three favourites have won the Hurdles, only one the. Steeplechase, and two the, Cornwall. The following table gives the record of winners in each race during the •past 18 years, showing the order of favouritism and the weight carried:—
