GOLF.

THE HAMILTON CLUB. LAST WEEK’S PLAY. By “Niblick.”) Last Saturday was a quiet one at St. Andrews links owing to the counter attraction of the races. A medal handicap was played and apparently those not interested in the other turf are the best golfers. . Fifteen players equalled or were b.etter than, the scratch score of the course, and the next six were one stroke more. The winner of the competition was a new member and a junior. His card of 86 from a handicap of 20 was an excellent one. but. it is obvious that he requires attention from the handicapper. L. S. Vale has been improving for some time as a result of patient practice and it. was unfortunate for him that his card of 09 net should have to take second place. G. H. Frater (16) and >. M Mayes (17) came next, with net cards of 71, and they were followed by L. R. W. Retd (14), D. Hazard (16). C. H. H. Clarke (11), and W. M. Moffat (18), all of whom were 72. Greens Improved. Conditions for golf were Ideal antf It was not surprising that so many good cards were handed ■ In. The surfaces of the older greens have Improved considerably during the last two or three weeks and the newer greens are in good order. The 4th and 17th new greens will be opened for play over this week-end and as soon as the lowering of the fairway at the 16th has been completed the new green for that hole will be brought into play. The new grass at the 7th and 10th greens is well established. The former will not be used for some weeks, but the latter will he playable as soon as the mound on the fairway short of the green has been lowered. With the fine weather this week, good progress has been made with the reconstruction work, but there is still ample to be completed before the championship tournament at the end of September. Waikato Winter Show Cup. The annual tournament for the Winter Show Cup will be decided this year on June 9, which Is the King'* Birthday celebration day. The event Is decided by stroke play over 36 holes on handicap.
