A FINE INDIVIDUAL.

BAFFLES AT HILLCREST. ACQUISITION TO WAIKATO. AN OUTSTANDING THOROUGHBRED Baffles, the recent acquisition to Mrs Gaine Carrington's stud, at Hillcrest, is a fine individual and indications are there will toe strong demand for his services. A beautifully timbred horse, well ribbed and possessing good shoulders and quarters, he is a fine example of thoroughbred, standing 16 hands. As was only to be expected he was rather light in condition on arriving from England but in the short time he has been at Hillcrest he has put on fully two cwt. of condition and is becoming rapidly acclimatised. He is to stand at the stud this season but only a limited number of mares will be booked to him. Baffles, who was sold as a yearling for 6000 guineas, is half brother toy Blandford to the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby winner Manna and three-quarter brother to Sandwich, winner of the St. Leger. Waffles, the dam of Baffles, is one of England’-s greatest brood mares, she also produced Parwiz, winner of the Gratwicke Stakes and her progeny collectively have won stakes amounting to £45,326. Waffles was by that great brood mare sire Buckwheat who was by Martian’s sire Martagon from Sesame by St. Simon. Her dam Lady Mischief was by St. Simon and this close breeding to St. Simon made Waffles an admirable mate for Blandford who showed a definite affinity for mares of St. Simon breeding. Suooess of Blandford Stock. It is worthy of note that Trigo, winner of the Derby and £27,102, Athford, winner of the Doncaster Cup and £7947, Harinero and Primero, both recent winners of the Irish Derby and St. Leger were all by Blandford from a mare with a double cross of St. Simon and hailing from the very successful Number 22 Family like Baffles. This family produced one of St. Simon’s greatest sons in St. Frusquin winner of £32,965 and whose brother San Francisco was a splendid success in New Zealand. Others of this line to win repute were Your Majesty, winner of St. Leger, Eclipse Stakes, etc., and £20,486, Cylgad (sire of the dams of Heroic and Cylinder), Captain Cuttle winner of the Derby—stakes £15,037, Mr Jinks winner of the Two Thousand Guineas —stakes £25,152, and Parth winner of over £32,000. Mr G. M. Currie's famous mare Eulogy from the number 22 family has established one of the most successful winning lines in the Stud Book. Outstanding at Stud. Manna, Baffles’ half-brother has been an outstanding success at the stud in England where he is fully booked at 400 guineas; his sons, Colombo unbeaten at two years and winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and £22,228 —considered unlucky to be beaten in the Derby and Miracle, also unbeaten at two years and winner of the Eclipse Stakes and £14,607 are both fully booked, while his daughter Archidania was the best three-year-old in Italy in 1936 winning the Italian Derby, One Thousand and Two Thousand Guineas and Oaks, etc. Baffles' three-quarter brother, Sandwich, has been fully booked since 1933 at 148 sovs.
