FIRE AT AUCKLAND

TIMBER PLANT DESTROYED

DAMAGE OVER £16,000.

SEVERAL FIREMEN BURNED

AUCKLAND, Monday

The main building and plant of the Morningside Tin>ber Company, Limited, at Morningside, was destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon. The damage is estimated at between £16,000 and £17,000. Sixty firemen battled in the fierce heat to quell the flames. While the flames were threatening the front wall of the office building the secretary of the company, Mr. B. E. J.,- Morris, broke and climbed through a ‘back window and removed the company’s books to safety. Between 20 and 30 firemen had their hands blistered by the flames and received first aid treatment. One displayed large scars caused by the heat of his brass helmet, which had fallen from his head on to the back of one hand. The principal loss was the machinery, which,- on a conservative estimate, was worth £15,000. Mr. R. E. Morris, secretary to the company, said policies were held in the New Zealand Insurance Office, but it was not possible, until some sort of order bad been restored, to give a reliable estimate of the amount of insurance cover.
